Title- “More Doctors Smoke Camels Than Any Other Cigarette”- the ad shows a kindly doctor patting a boy’s head.  In those days tobacco companies loved to associate there product with doctors.  This ad claimed that 113,597 doctors were asked “What cigarette do you smoke, Doctor?” and that Camel was the brand most named.

Title- “Camels for Mildness!”- the ad shows professional golfers Lou Worsham and Gene Sarazen talking about how fabulous Camel cigrettes are.  An athlete endorsing smoking is unthinkable now but was standard procedure not that long ago.

Title- “Camels friendly Mildness and richer Flavor agree with more people than any other brand.”- the ad shows movie star Rock Hudson posed in a stable.

 

Hudson (1925–1985) was an American actor, generally known for his turns as a leading man during the 1950s and 1960s. He achieved stardom with roles in films such as Magnificent Obsession (plugged in this ad), All That Heaven Allows and Giant. He found continued success with a string of romantic comedies co-starring Doris Day in Pillow Talk (1959), Lover Come Back (1961) and Send Me No Flowers (1964). Hudson began a second career in television through the 1970s and 1980s, starring in the popular mystery series McMillan & Wife and the soap opera Dynasty. He died in 1985, becoming the first major celebrity to die from an AIDS-related illness.

1957 large (10 ½ x 13 ½ ) color magazine ad for Camels with Don Larsen- Yankees Perfect Game Hero

Titled- “Have a real cigarette- have a Camel”- the ad shows NewYork Yankee pitcher Don Larsen standing in Yankee Stadium where, the year before, he pitched the only perfect game in World Series history. Larsen was in the news recently because he planned to sell the uniform he wore that day. He was expecting to get bids in excess of seven figures. It’s doubtful that RJ Reynolds paid him that much for this ad but tobacco endorsements by athletes, movie stars and other celebrities were a common advertising tactic in the 1940s and 50s.

Titled - “Rootin’ for the Big Five- Cinco”- ad shows a basketball crowd at Madison Square Garden.

History -(from Wikipedia) The Madison Square Garden pictured in this ad is the third Madison Square Garden for New York.  It operated in a new location, on 8th Avenue between 49th and 50th Streets, from 1925 to 1968.  Groundbreaking took place on January 9, 1925.  It was designed by the noted theater architect Thomas W. Lamb, and was built at a cost of $4.75 million in 249 days by boxing promoter Tex Rickard.  The arena had seating on three levels, and a maximum capacity of 18,496 spectators for boxing.

 

Cinco Cigars were produced by the Webster Tobacco Company of New York.

Cinco Cigars 1947 Ad, Santa Anita

Titled - “Best Bet’s Cinco”- ad shows a crowd at Santa Anita Park (race track) in California.


History -  In 1933, California legalized parimutuel wagering and several investor groups worked to open racetracks.  Two of these groups combined in the newly formed Los Angeles Turf Club and opened the present day race track on Christmas Day in 1934, making it the first formally-established racetrack in California.  Architect Gordon Kaufmann designed its various buildings in a combination of Colonial Revival and a type of Art Deco known as Streamline Moderne, painted primarily in Santa Anita's signature colors of Persian Green and Chiffon Yellow.

Title- “I love him when he smokes his Kaywoodie”- the ad shows a woman fawning over her pipe-smoking man.

History- (from Pipedia) Kaywoodie was the name of a pipe offered by Kaufman Brothers & Bondy Company (KBB), first appearing in February of 1919. The origin of the name Kaywoodie is a combination of the K from Kaufman and wood, as in briar.

When the Kaywoodie pipe was first introduced it came with a hand cut rubber mouthpiece fitted with an aluminum inbore tube. This device was to "assure a clean, cool smoke."

By 1935, the manufacturing operations moved to West New York, New Jersey which, at the time, was touted as the largest pipe making facility in the world. At the height of production, there were 500 employees producing up to 10,000 pipes per day.

Title- “Switch from hots to snow fresh Kool.” The ad shows a couple of overdressed bird watchers in the woods plus Willie the penguin at the top of the ad.

History- (from Wikipedia) KOOL is a brand of menthol cigarette currently produced by the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, introduced in 1933, that has marketed itself towards the "sophisticated man". Originally introduced in unfiltered "regular" size (i.e., short), filtered 85 mm king-size versions were later added to the lineup. Nat King Cole, who died of lung cancer at the age of 45, was known to chain-smoke Kools, which he believed to have a beneficial effect upon his singing voice.

Kool cigarette advertising began with the character of Willie the penguin who was portrayed in several different professions, among which were a doctor, a soldier and a chef. In the early 1960s, the image of the cartoon penguin was no longer used, and Kool instead began linking the cool taste of menthol to cool outdoor scenes portraying water or snow. In the newest Kool ads, male/female encounters and sports references are prominent.

Titled - “Smoke a lucky to feel your level best!”- ad shows a girl smoking and skiing.  That's quite a neat trick when you come to think about it- smoking and skiing.  But she is woman, hear her cough.

Titled - “This Christmas Jack Benny is giving”- the ad shows comedian Jack Benny surrounded by cartons of Christmas themed Lucky Strikes.  Benny was one of the leading entertainers of the twentieth century with a highly popular comedic career in radio, television, and film.  He was known for his comic timing, his long arm swing, and the ability to cause laughter with a long pause or a single expression.  His radio and television programs were popular from 1932 until his death in 1974.

 

History - (edited from Wikipedia) - Throughout their 150-year history Lucky Strike has had fluctuating market relevance, with the brand peaking in the 1930s and 1940s becoming one of the top-selling cigarette brand in the United States.  One of the company's advertising campaigns featured a series of advertisements using Hollywood actors as endorsers of Lucky Strike.  In 1937–38, Luckies paid $130,000 ($3.2 million in 2019 USD) to 16 Hollywood actors and actresses for their endorsement, the highest paid being Joan Crawford, Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, Myrna Loy, Robert Taylor, and Spencer Tracy who were each paid $10,000 (roughly $178,000 in 2019 USD).

For many years the company’s “living trademark” was Johnny Roventini (known popularly as Johnny Philip Morris), an American actor with dwarfism.  Less than four feet tall as a fully developed adult, Roventini was working as a bellboy at the New Yorker Hotel in 1933 when he was discovered by an advertising mogul.  He soon became famous as a product spokesman for Philip Morris brand cigarettes in radio, television, and print advertising media. He represented the company for more than 40 years.

Title- “New Philip Morris Snap Open Pack!” - The ad shows a glamorous blonde (painted by Edwin Georgi) opening a pack of Philip Morris cigarettes.  Georgi (1896-1964) was a mid-century magazine and advertising illustrator who was renown for his beautiful women (and stylish men) and his unique and spectacular color sense.  His images brim with drama and pull you in. Title- “Gently Does It” - The ad shows a young couple at the beach.  Art is by Joe Bowler whose "illustrations from dashing beach scenes of a go-go America to a portrait of Rose Kennedy were constantly on the pages and covers of Time, McCall’s and Saturday Evening Post. History- (from Wikipedia) In 1902, Philip Morris & Co., Ltd. was incorporated in New York City. The company made its first cigarettes in Richmond in 1929.

For many years the company’s “living trademark” was Johnny Roventini (known popularly as Johnny Philip Morris), an American actor with dwarfism.

Rothman's Cigarettes, 1958 Ad

Title- “The one filter cigarette that really satisfies”- the ad shows an airline pilot’s hands offering his buddy a Rothman’s cigarette.

History- Rothmans was founded by Louis Rothman in 1890 as a small kiosk on Fleet Street in London. In 1900 Rothman opened a small showroom in Pall Mall, from where he launched his famous Pall Mall cigarette brand. His reputation was such that King Edward VII granted Rothmans a royal warrant in 1905. Rothmans was first listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1929.

Condition- This ad is in excellent condition and measures 10 ¼ x 14.

Viceroy Cigarettes 1957 Ad

with Mickey Mantle and other sport stars

1957 large (21 x 13 ½ ) Mickey Mantle ad for Viceroy Cigarettes

Titled- “Why do America’s Champion Athletes Choose Viceroy”- the ad shows New York Yankee baseball star Mickey Mantle, golf pro Sam Snead, diver Zoe Ann Olsen, and tennis player Pancho Gonzales all singing the praises of Viceroy. 

 

The answer to the question, of course, is "Because Viceroy gives them money."  Tobacco endorsements by athletes, movie stars, and other celebrities was a common advertising tactic in the 1940s and 50s.

History- (from Wikipedia) Viceroy Cigarettes were made by Brown & Williamson, and originated in the U.S. in 1936 as the world's first cork-tipped filter cigarette. In 1952 it was the first brand to add a cellulose acetate filter which established a new industry standard. In 1953, Viceroy Filter Kings were introduced.

Condition- This two-page ad is in excellent condition. It was the center spread of a magazine so there is a crease in the middle and some holes where the staples were.  The ad is sold untrimmed and not matted.
