Movie posters are a popular collectible.  Movie ads in magazines employee the same popular artwork but are much cheaper because they were printed in greater quantities.  Also have ads for radio and TV shows in this section and some movie-related vintage sheet music.

1954 Movie Ad, Walt Disney's

1954 (10 1/4 x 13 ¼ ) color magazine ad for Disney movie “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”

Title- “Walt Disney presents the Mightiest Motion Picture of them All!” – the ad shows an underwater scene from the movie.

History- (from Wikipedia) “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” was an adventure film starring Kirk Douglas, James Mason, Paul Lukas, and Peter Lorre. It was the first CinemaScope science fiction film. The film is adapted from Jules Verne's 19th century novel “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea”. The movie received positive reviews from critics, and was the second highest grossing film of the year (behind “White Christmas”), earning $8 million in box office attendance in North America. It has become a notable classic film of the Disney corporation.

Condition- This ad is in excellent condition.

 

1950 Movie Ad, American Guerrilla in the Philippines with Tyrone Power

Title- “At last it comes to the screen” – the ad shows Power in a clinch with his co-star Micheline Prelle.

History- (from Wikipedia) American Guerrilla in the Philippines is a 1950 American war film directed by Fritz Lang and starring Tyrone Power as a U.S. Navy ensign stranded by the Japanese occupation of the Philippines in World War II.  Based on the 1945 book of the same name by Ira Wolfert, it was filmed on location.


Condition- This ad is in excellent condition and measures 10 ¼ x 14.

Title- “The story of a guy that women go for” – the ad shows a portrait of Garfield smoking a cigarette and a provocatively posed female.

History- (from Wikipedia) Body and Soul is a 1947 film noir/sports drama directed by Robert Rossen, featuring John Garfield, Lilli Palmer, Hazel Brooks, Anne Revere and William Conrad.  The film, written by Abraham Polonsky with cinematography by James Wong Howe, is considered to be among the best films about boxing.  It's also a cautionary tale about the lure of money—and how it can derail even a strong common man in his pursuit of success.  John Garfield was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for this movie.


Condition- This ad is in excellent condition.

Title- “Vivian Leigh in her first great role since Scarlet in Gone With the Wind ”- Caesar and Cleopatra was a 1945 British Technicolor film starring Vivien Leigh, Claude Rains, and Stewart Granger. Filmed in Technicolor with lavish sets, the production was reported to be the most expensive film ever made at the time, costing $5.1-million US. The film was described as a "box office stinker" at the time..

History- Vivien Leigh (1913–1967) was a British actress who won the Academy Award for Best Actress twice: once for her performance as Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind (1939) and a second time as Blanche DuBois in the film version of A Streetcar Named Desire (1951). In 1999 the American Film Institute ranked Leigh as the 16th greatest female movie star of classic Hollywood cinema.


Condition- This ad is in excellent condition and measures 10 ¼ x 14 inches..

History- (from Wikipedia) – California is a 1947 American western film directed by John Farrow and featuring Ray Milland, Barbara Stanwyck, and Barry Fitzgerald.

It's an epic account of how California became a state, featuring a wagon train, the Gold Rush, a wicked saloon queen, and an evil profiteer.

Title- “John Ford's Masterpiece of the Frontier!”- the two page ad shows a scene from the movie Fort Apache and sketches of the cast.

History- (from Wikipedia) – Fort Apache is a 1948 American western film directed by John Ford and starring John Wayne and Henry Fonda. The film was the first of the director's "cavalry trilogy" and was followed by She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949) and Rio Grande (1950).

The film was one of the first to present an authentic and sympathetic view of the Native Americans.  New York Times movie critic Dave Kehr called it "one of the great achievements of classical American cinema, a film of immense complexity that never fails to reveal new shadings with each viewing ... among the first pro-Indian westerns" that portrays the Native Americans with "sympathy and respect".

1948 Movie Ad, "Paleface”

Large (10 ¼ x 13 ¼) 1948 original full-page, color, print ad for movie “The Paleface” with Bob Hope and Jane Russell

Title- “Bob’s got a new Jane- the Jane!”- the ad shows Hope and Russell in their move outfits.

History- (from Wikipedia) “The Paleface” is a 1948 Technicolor comedy Western directed by Norman Z. McLeod, starring Bob Hope as "Painless Potter" and Jane Russell as Calamity Jane. In the film, Hope sings the song Buttons and Bows (by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans), which became his greatest hit by far when it came to record sales. The song also won the Academy Award for Best Song that year.

Condition- This handsome ad is in fair condition with some staining around the edges.  The ad is sold untrimmed and not matted.

1946 Movie Ad, Walt Disney's "Song of the South”

1946 full-page (21 x 13 1/4) magazine ad for Walt Disney’s “Song of the South”

 

Title- “Song of the South” - This ad was clearly intended to give the movie an A-1 buildup.  It has a “Gone With the Wind” look to it. 

 

History- Modestly describing itself as “an epochal event in screen history” ”Song of the South” was a 1946 film produced by Walt Disney and released by RKO Radio Pictures. The film is based on the Uncle Remus stories by Joel Chandler Harris. It is a combination of animation and live action (the ad says it’s Disney’s “first live-action feature").  The hitsong from the film was "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah", which won the 1947 Academy Award for Best Song.  Because of content which Disney executives believe is politically incorrect the film has never been released in its entirety on home video in the USA.

Condition- The ad is a two-page center spread from “Look Magazine”.  It is in excellent shape with only the three staple holes on the center seam.

1941 Movie Ad, "Virginia"

Titled - “Eye-thrilling beauty…heart-thrilling romance!”- ad shows highlights from the 1941 movie Virginia.

History - (from IMDB) Virginia was produced in 1941 by Paramount. The story involves a New York chorus girl (Madeleine Carroll) comes home to claim her family plantation and must choose between two men (Fred MacMurray, Sterling Hayden), one rich, one not.

 

Condition- This ad is in excellent condition.

1958 Movie Ad, Five Walt Disney Movies for 1959

Large 1948 original 2-page, color print ad for five Walt Disney movies

Title- “Five Walt Disney movies for you and your family in 1959!" - the ad shows a scene from Tonka,The Shaggy Dog, Darby O'Gill and the Little People, Sleeping Beauty and Third Man on the Mountain.  There's also a head shot of Walt Disney himself since he was now a TV star thanks to hosting his popular weekly show.

History- (edited from Wikipedia) – Although Walt Disney productions was busy with television and the development of Disneyland the studio would still produce an average of five releases per year throughout the 1950s and 60s.  The Shaggy Dog (1959), one of the five pictures mentioned in this ad, became the highest grossing film in the U.S. and Canada for Disney at over $9 million.

Condition- This ad is in excellent condition and is comprised of two separate pages and would need to be matted to display properly. It measures 20 ½ x 14 inches.
