Movie Posters

In recent years, the hobby of movie poster collecting has become a worldwide passion. Posters that could have been purchased ten years ago for $15 are now going for about $160. Classic posters have become more appreciated as they are becoming harder to find. Over the next few years, they will become even more valuable.

Before 1980, posters were made in a variety of sizes. A one-sheet poster measures 27" x 41" - the size of a regular movie poster. An insert is 14" x 36". The artwork depicted on these is usually the same as on the one-sheet poster. Three sheet posters are 41" x 81". This is approximately three times the size of a one-sheet. A half-sheet is printed with credits and artwork that run horizontally. This poster is wider than it is high. I have attached a photo to show the relative size of the most popular movie poster sizes.

Posters of this era were to be used by theatres while a movie was playing. After that it was to be returned to the poster exchange or destroyed.
This, of course, makes them harder to find today and, once found, they usually show signs of wear.

Paul Douglas, who had been a successful sports announcer before going to Hollywood, was a natural for the role of gruff manager who is overdue for a reformation. Janet Leigh was an up-and-coming starlet at MGM, freshly married to actor Tony Curtis when this movie came out in 1951.

In addition to the two stars the cast features a number of well-known MGM studio players including Keenan Wynn, Spring Byington, Lewis Stone and Bruce Bennett.

Original one-sheet theatre poster for 1953 20th Century Fox Movie – The Glory Brigade

Large (27” x 41”) 1-Sheet Poster for 1953 War Movie “The Glory Brigade” with Victor Mature

Original (not a reprint) one-sheet (27” X 41”) movie poster from the 1953 Twentieth Century Fox film The Glory Brigade starring Victor Mature, Lee Marvin and Richard Egan.  The poster, numbered 53/290, is folded, with minor spots, pinholes and one larger hole near the Y in the title.  Overall it’s in very good condition. See the close up scans for a better look.

Set during the Korean War Mature volunteers his platoon to escort Greek troops to perform a reconnaissance mission behind Communist lines. Due to his Greek heritage Mature is initially proud to accompany the Greek contingent but his feelings change to scorn and mistrust when he thinks cowardice is shown by the Greek soldiers and their leaders.  An uneasy alliance is maintained between the US and Greek troops as the enemy's true objective is learned.

Victor Mature was a popular American leading man mostly in action pictures and sand and sandal epics.  His most acclaimed roles came shortly after World War II as Doc Holliday in John Ford's My Darling Clementine (1946) and as a stoolie in Henry Hathaway's Kiss of Death (1947).  He is most famous, however, for his more exotic roles in films like Samson and Delilah (1949) and The Egyptian (1954).

Co-star Lee Marvin was a long time supporting actor (often as a vicious heavy) who morphed into a grizzled leading man after he won an Oscar in the comedy western Cat Ballou (1965).  The Dirty Dozen (1967) is probably his best known movie.  He is also known for a highly publicized lawsuit in which an ex-live in girlfriend sued him for a substantial portion of his assets. She lost but the case established a legal precedent for the rights of unmarried cohabiters.

Richard Egan was another popular action player during the 1950s.  His best known movie was probably Pollyanna.

1949 Insert 20th Century Fox Movie Poster Mr. Belvedere Goes to College

$40

Insert Poster (14” x 36”) for 1949 20th Century Fox Movie- Mr. Belvedere Goes to College

Original (not a reprint) insert movie poster from the movie Mr. Belvedere Goes to College a 1949 comedy starring Clifton Webb and Shirley Temple. It focuses on Webb as prickly genius Lynn Belvedere who enrolls in a major university with the intention of obtaining a four-year degree in only one year.

This is an unrestored poster measuring 14” x 36” with folds, some edge wear and pinholes.  The serial number is 49-227.

Clifton Webb (1889-1966) was the cinema’s favorite snob of the 1940s whether in comedies or dramas.  Apparently the finicky, fussy, and condescending personality he presented on the screen was not that far from his real-life personality.

Shirley Temple (1928-2014) was easily the most popular and famous child star of all time. She got her start in the movies at the age of three and soon progressed to super stardom.  She was box-office champion for the consecutive years 1935-36-37-38, and a marketing bonanza.  Fans bought millions of dollars' worth of products that had her likeness on them.  Dolls, phonograph records, mugs, hats, dresses, whatever it was, if it had her picture they bought it.

Before 1980, posters were made in a variety of sizes. An insert poster like this one measures 14" x 36".  See the graphic at the top of this page to see the relative size of the most popular movie poster sizes.

Original one-sheet theatre poster for 1949 Republic Western Movie – Navajo Trail Riders

$65

Large (27” x 41”) 1-Sheet Poster for 1949 Western- Navajo Trail Riders

Original (not a reprint) one-sheet (27” X 41”) movie poster from the 1949 Republic film Navajo Trail Riders starring Allan “Rocky” Lane.  This is an unrestored poster with edge and fold wear, creases, pinholes, misfolds, smudges, some staining, and small chips in the border.

Allan "Rocky" Lane (1909-1973) started as a leading man in major studio dramas but faded to "B" serials and westerns in later life. Making his film debut with "Not Quite Decent" (1929), he had trouble rising in stature, however, and left Hollywood in 1932. Giving it a second try a few years later he played second lead roles in good quality "B" films, throughout the late 30s, including "Stowaway"(1936), with little Shirley Temple, "Maid's Night Out"(1938) with Joan Fontaine, and "Twelve Crowded Hours" (1939), co-starring Lucille Ball.

His serials as steadfast Mountie Dave King, proved popular and, around this time, he started gaining attention as a photogenic and personable cowboy star. With his trusty steed Black Jack, he churned out a bucketful of westerns every year for nearly a decade. He may be best remembered these days as the off-camera voice for the talking horse "Mister Ed" in the 1960s television sitcom.

The movie starred Robert Walker, Joan Leslie, Edward Arnold, Spring Byington, Leon Ames, and Jan Sterling and was directed by Elliott Nugent.

Robert Walker (October 13, 1918 – August 28, 1951) was best known for his starring role in Alfred Hitchcock's 1951 thriller “Strangers on a Train.” His off-screen life was short and unhappy. Twice divorced by the time he was 30, he suffered from alcoholism and mental illness.

His first wife was actress Phylis Isley, who later took the stage name Jennifer Jones and became a protégée (and lover) of producer David O. Selznick. Walker and she divorced in 1945.

Walker's charming demeanor and boyish good looks caught on and he worked steadily playing "boy-next-door" roles in films such as “See Here, Private Hargrove” (1944) and “Her Highness and the Bellboy” (1945). He also appeared in Selznick's “Since You Went Away” (1944) in which he and Jones portrayed doomed young lovers during World War II.
